Welcome to SCOTLAND
an extra service of European City Guide / ECG

Information about SCOTLAND Much of Scotland’s character has been honed by the competition with its southern neighbour, but the country is handsome and historic in its own right. It is littered with regal castles and the sites of famous battles and its mountains, while not the highest, are as beautiful as any and a source of great pride among the Scots. Scotland’s cities grew enormously during The Industrial Revolution, while its coastal towns and villages got on with the business of harvesting the seas. While the country suffered greatly at the death of heavy industry, this has meant that much of its tradition has not been swept away by modern methods. Like many Northern European countries, the climate is a big part of life in Scotland, though for many of its inhabitants, this is no impediment to getting on with life and many will claim with pride that it takes a certain type of person to prosper there. The highlight of the calendar is the Edinburgh Arts Festival in August, and the simultaneous Fringe Festival, both world renown. The Highland games is a kind of Olympics of ancient sports and the Scottish make New Years Eve, or Hogmanay, an event all of their own.
